SCORPION - Like Liu, I went the "origin story" route with Scorpion, I wanted to make his body look like he's just been murdered by Sub-Zero. I experimented with having him bald in this costume to go with the outfit, but it turns out that Liu with no hair at all really doesn't look anything like Liu Kang to me, it just made him look like "generic monk", and I didn't want to lose any sense of the characters' identities in their costumes. It shows him in the orange robes that traditional Shaolin Monks wear in the real world. LIU KANG - Liu's alt fits one of those two alt costume themes I like, the "origin story" one.

But I gave him a red vest like he wore in the movie instead of a jacket, because I also like to sneak movie references in here and there when they don't intrude on or contradict anything. So for his non-fighting duds, I wanted Kano to be dressed like a gangster, so I thought of things like Scarface and Miami Vice because it feels natural to me to think of throwbacks to the 80's when thinking of the mafia, and went with a leisure suit and big chain. The Red Dragon would be a clan, sure, but the Black are a "syndicate", which means they're a gang, a mafia, an organized crime cartel. People often call the Black Dragon a "clan", but that's not accurate, the word "clan" implies secret ninja guilds and stuff like that. One is "origin story clothes", which you see with other characters, and another is "street clothes", which is where I went with Kano. KANO - There are a couple themes I like to stick to when it comes to alts. The lighting isn't the best but I really like the way the darkened pleather looks.( Click Here to read how I would retell MK1's story) The color is a bit light so I used some test strips and darkened them with some black acrylic paint. I found some brown pleather on sale at the fabric store and picked up 2 yards for $10 total. While I'm on the topic of leather I think I found a way to make the straps, I just need to add some leather straps to it to finish the gauntlets Then I traced it onto foam, sewed black fabric around it and sewed them together to get this I started by making a pattern by wrapping my hand in plastic wrap, then masking tape and cut it off to transfer it to paper for a pattern. Here is what it looked like with my MK2 Scorpion mask. Then I cut out the lining for the detail on the hood, and sewed it on. next i think i'll make the gauntlets and a hood for the tunic,įirst lets start with the hood, I drew up these patterns and sewed them together I think I am going to wait till the end to add the belts because Scorpion has something like 30 belts on this costume. I'm very happy with the way its looking so far. It was a very difficult piece to so and I was very happy with the way it turned out.Īnd some of me wearing it with the under shirt I made and an extra belt that was laying around I used the patterns and the same foam fabric technique from above. I traced them on 2mm foam and then traced it on some fabric I had left over from the under suit I made, I sewed the fabric onto the foam to give the shoulders volume and then onto the tunic, here was the result. I then added some black lining to the outside of the tunic and moved on to the shoulder and neck pieces. I went back to the store and bought some brown dye and added a few squirts to the yellow dye to give it a darker yellow look that I was happy with.

The canvas is the fabric on the bottom( the green is for another project)Īfter the first round of dyeing the fabric was looking way to bright of a yellow. Made some progress on the tunic this weekend!įirst I went to Hobby Lobby and found some canvas fabric that had a nice texture but the only problem as the color, it was white so I had to buy some yellow dye.
